When we think about the forces that shape an artist's work, we often focus on technique, training, or artistic influences. But what happens when your creative vision is forged in the crucible of family history, cultural conflict, and personal discovery? For photographer Josh, whose work bridges the gap between Japanese and Filipino martial arts traditions, the answer lies in understanding that art isn't just about what you create—it's about reconciling who you are with where you come from.

Throughout my creative journey, I've often reflected on how my work represents me and is shaped by my cultural background and life experiences. ETEBT embodies this reflection—it's my journey to find inspiration in how different people create, produce, and live their lives in ways that inspire others. Tygua perfectly exemplifies this spirit.

Etebt, an Amharic term, refers to the umbilical cord—the essence of where you come from and who you are. With this project, I aim to capture people working in different creative mediums and understand what inspires and drives their creations. It's a mixed-media project where I'll compile video and audio interviews of these creatives, along with portraits I've taken or edited.
